It’s well known that an underpinning factor in how we perform on a daily basis is our inner state, which includes both our emotions and our underlying physiology. Who hasn’t been caught between positive thoughts about our next meeting, and emotions about that morning's argument with the kids?
Research over the last 30 years has led to new understandings on the interactions between the heart, brain and nervous system and how these interactions impact performance, judgement and our responses to potentially stressful situations. A measurable physiological state has been identified that underlies optimal performance and emotional stability called “coherence” - a state of synchronisation between the heart, brain and nervous system.
This “coherence” even applies between people: research has also shown that we naturally entrain to other people’s heart rhythms and can sense the electromagnetic transmission that is quite literally being pumped from the heart. For example, you can literally feel tension in a room where there’s just been an argument.
HeartMath is a system of practical techniques and biofeedback technology which enables us to measure this “coherence”. This helps individuals train their inner state to achieve higher levels of performance, reduce stress under pressure, build resilience, and improve their non-verbal communication. It has been used successfully by thousands of individuals as well as a wide range of businesses, sports, educational and health care organisations. High performance is effectively about transforming stress into coherence and HeartMath is the only scientifically-validated system of stress intervention techniques and objective biometric feedback that quantifiably—and dramatically—boosts not only the performance of individuals but also their health and executive resilience.
Linac Learning runs regular events that explore the use of HeartMath as part of an Equine Leadership Experience Day. Horses are particularly attuned to coherence, and instinctively know when a leader is confident or stressed, which makes them ideal for giving leaders instinctive, instant feedback to their leadership style. This combination of equine intuition and the objectivity of the HeartMath System together provides a uniquely holistic and experiential way of exploring and achieving personal peak performance.
